This article explores the intersection of revisionist westerns and settler colonialism, focusing on the genre’s critique of capitalist development in the American West. Revisionist westerns of the mid-to-late 20th century are recognized for rejecting the white supremacy embedded in the cultural portrayal of settlers or “pioneers.” A closer examination reveals that the genre also critiques settlers’ commercial and industrial ventures, which disrupted the political economies of Indigenous peoples. From Broken Arrow (1950) to Little Big Man (1970) to Dances with Wolves (1990), revisionist westerns expose how settlers’ drive to commodify and dominate nature shaped the trajectory of U.S. history.
