An academic conference was held on 21-27 May 1982, sponsored jointly by the American Studies Institute of Seoul National University and the Center for Korean Studies of the University of Hawaii. More than fifty scholars from both countries participated in the conference to review the past, analyze the current state of affairs, and offer projections on the future. Collected in this volume are selected essays from this conference. Basic issues of the American-Korean relationship were raised -- for example, mutual perceptions and images, the alliance system, the role of neighboring states, economic and commercial intercourse, and the impact of all these forces on both societies.
